“The Garden Club”

In rural KZN, where access to fresh produce is often limited, Zakhele Selby Xulu, a cohort 3 fellow and principal at Nkwambazi Primary School, made it his personal mission to address the problem. He ignited a powerful movement by launching a garden club at his school which aims to tackle food security challenges and to empower his learners. He wanted his learners to see themselves as agents of intentional change in this regard.

The garden club has played a vital role in enhancing food security and teaches learners how to trade, in turn, developing practical skills in marketing and sales which prepare them for future economic endeavors. This hands-on experience not only boosts their confidence but also instills a sense of responsibility and accountability as they actively engage in project management and execution.

The impact of Zakhele’s initiative has been profound. It has sparked a transformative shift among learners, significantly boosting motivation and attendance. More importantly, it has inspired a newfound interest in agriculture as a viable career path, offering students pathways to economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods.

As we witness these positive changes, Zakhele’s garden club is not just about growing plants, it’s about nurturing future leaders who are ready to tackle the challenges of today and build a brighter tomorrow, which defines what we’re about at Teach The Nation.
